WEAK SIGNALS & EMERGING TRENDS

Every two years, Y.SPOT publishes its report, Wide Angle, offering a look at the technological trends that will shape our future.

Wide Angle is much more than just a compilation of technological trends; it is a meticulous radar designed to anticipate and explore major developments that will shape our lives in the coming years. To achieve this, we work closely with researchers and experts from CEA in various fields such as digital, energy, health, and many others.

360° vison
A Multisectoral Approach

What makes Wide Angle unique is its 360° approach. Unlike a tunnel vision, we venture into the multisectoral crossroads, thus broadening our scope. Our goal is to identify technologies with high potential for social transformation and impact across different industries. After all, true disruptions often emerge from unexpected horizons.

Trend Mapping

A flagship visual of the Wide Angle reports, the trend mapping highlights major trends at the intersection of several fields.

MAPPING
Weak Signals & Emerging Trends 2024

This mapping aims to identify topics of interest to monitor and include in a radar for observing new trends, whether technological or societal. This “metro line” representation is not temporally discriminative (short term / long term) but allows for spotting nodes of technological convergence at the intersection of multiple sectors. This “horizon scanning” exercise is conducted annually by CEA Y.SPOT. The choice of trends is a deliberate stance and may be debated among the consulted experts (true weak signal or trend effect), but it highlights certain topics and forces the reader to take a stance.

Weak Signals & Emerging Trends 2022

The efficiency of production systems in the service of growth has been the dominant paradigm for decades. However, the global health crisis known as COVID-19 revealed that a globalized system operating on a just-in-time basis (minimizing stocks as much as possible, optimizing production costs, offshoring, etc.) had intrinsic vulnerabilities. For this reason, the resilience of systems has made a strong comeback since 2020. In this report, it is particularly illustrated by the themes of circularity, swarm robustness, and smart dust…
